Food, art, nature in the Annapolis Valley

Canada

(Non European countries)

FoodArtNature is a new experiential tourism program launched in May 2023 in the Annapolis Valley, a first of its kind in Atlantic Canada. It aims to create regenerative tourism experiences through the celebration of sustainable food and agriculture, reconnecting with nature, art, and local culture.

The experiences offered at “Foodartnature” are the product of efforts from a small, passionate group of community leaders in the Annapolis Valley with the participation of local practitioners (tourism providers, farmers and other small local businesses).

All 15 created experiences are based on and follow the beliefs that: 1. Local practitioners have a wealth of knowledge that can and should be shared with others. 2. Visitors and residents of the Annapolis Valley community should have access to regenerative experiences that highlight sustainable food and agriculture, nature, ecology, and local culture. 3. With enough effort and care, they can provide memorable, unique experiences that people will love.

Benefits

Foodartnature experiences provide an opportunity for visitors to experience nature and local people, and help them to appreciate the value of food, the value of nature, and the value of people. A variety of unique experiences highlight the sense of place and enable visitors to connect with local people, provide the potential for people to spend time in the Valley, and enjoy more than one experience during their trip, creating more spinoffs for local businesses. Hosts communicate their story in genuine and original ways, reflecting local traditions, facilitated learning with hands-on activities, serving local foods where appropriate, and providing opportunities for guests to make personalized takeaways. A strong local collaboration network of tourism providers, local SME’s, farmers, tourism experience design experts, and non-profit organizations has been created.

Key Success

Readiness of local practitioners to join the initiative and invest their time while going through the development process.

Variety of partners, joining different professional knowledge and expertise for a common goal. Different aspects were thus considered when developing the experiences, including the visitors, environment, local people, logistics, etc.
