Friend of the Sea is a project of the World Organisation for Sustainability, an international NGO with the objective of promoting environmental conservation.
It grants certification standards for products and services from sustainable sea fisheries and sustainable aquaculture.
Friends of the Sea promotes the economic and social development of fishing communities through the implementation of responsible fishing practices, thereby reducing the harm to marine biological diversity.
It also certifies companies that are environmentally and socially responsible and guarantees the quality of their products, which gives them a competitive advantage.
It also educates the public about the cultural significance of seafood and the importance of sustainable resource management through cultural projects and events that demonstrate the environmental value of sustainable practices.
Sustainability certification creates credibility and confidence in the origin and quality of the food placed on the market by companies.
The creation of partnerships helps to promote sustainable practices, encourages the adoption of certification programmes and boosts demand for certified seafood on the market.
In addition, raising consumer awareness is key to realising the environmental and social benefits of sustainable choices, which ultimately leads to increased demand for certified seafood products and encourages the industry to also adopt sustainable practices.
