OXI Farmers Market Nicosia

Cyprus

(Europe)

The OXI farmers market is one of the most historical farmers’ markets in Cyprus. The farmers sell the freshest of seasonal, local produce – mainly fruit and vegetables – with bargains to be had, all in the historical setting of the Ottoman mosque. The OXI farmers market supports local producers, promotes traditional culinary products and gives the opportunity to tourists to have an authentic experience. Farmers’ markets in Cyprus are becoming more and more popular, with several opening up across the island. The Ministry of Agriculture of Cyprus has given incentives for the development of farmers markets across the island in order to support producers.

Benefits

The farmers market gives the opportunity to local producers to sell their products without the intervention of intermediaries and at the same time gives the opportunity to locals and visitors to choose and buy the freshest local products. Local farm production is supported and strengthened. Thus smaller need for imported products and accompanied carbon footprint increase. High food and energy costs are forcing people to switch from doing their grocery shopping in malls and supermarkets to the less expensive traditional food markets.
Furthermore, it offers tourists the opportunity to interact with the local society and experience the local culture. From a cultural aspect it contributes to the preservation of a social event that is part of the city’s life for many years. Ingredients that are used in the traditional Cypriot cuisine are sold, maintaining the gastronomic culture of the island.

Key Success

The success factors of the farmers market is the authentic character of the event, the high quality and freshness of the products and the wide range of products available. Visitors have the opportunity to see, smell, touch and taste the freshest fruits, vegetables and traditional products exclusively sold by the island’s producers. All in the historical setting of one of the 11 bastions of the Venetian walls of Lefkosia (Nicosia) and with the Ottoman mosque in the background.
